Born in
Florida, raised in Atlanta, Barbara Field has spent most of her life in
Westen North Carolina and Asheville. A professional architect, she is
married with three grown children. She lives with her husband, Chris,
in downtown Asheville.
Barbara has
served for almost ten years on Asheville City Council. Elected in 1991,
1993, 1995, for 2 year terms, she was elected in 1997 for a four year
term and fourth consecutive term. From 1995-1997, she served as Asheville's
Vice Mayor. While on City Council, Barbara has led a dynamic process that
brought disadvantaged neighborhoods together to understand the causes
of poverty and neighborhood decay so that solutions to these problems
could be implemented. She has brought about a minimum housing code ensuring
safe, decent housing for many who had gone without. She has formulated
a participatory process for a major inner city highway corridor, which
involved all special interest groups early on in the planning process,
resulting in an environmentally sound and sensible pathway decision.
She serves on
numerous local, regional, and national boards and commissions.
